buy custom Health Insurance essay

buy custom Health Insurance essay Health insurance is a term used to explain a program which assists in paying medical expenses. The term is common in the United States. It can be through social insurance or privately purchased insurance. There is a high concentration in the United States health insurance market. The top health insurance companies have formed over 400 mergers since mid of health insurance cover that is non-medical is disability income insurance. There is also supplemental coverage and long term care insurance programs that are non-medical. The health care in the United States depends heavily on health insurance. The two common insurance programs are not-to-profit and private health insurances that are available for individuals in the US. Many people do not have health insurance covers. This means that they are unable to have timely medical care. There is a 40 % higher risk of dying in comparison with those that have insurance covers. In the United States, a research carried out in 2004 showed that 45000 deaths were due to lack of health insurance cover. There is a debate in the United States over the possible remedies and causes of low level of insurance membership. The issue is analyzed together with the repercussions it has on the United States healthcare system. When one has an insurance cover, the health insurance company helps to settle the hospital bill. This means that one will not incur a heavy burden of paying the finances. When one has a health insurance cover, he or she is much more likely to visit the docto r for medical attention. There have been critics for and against health insurance in the United States. There are some reasons that can make an insurance company unable to pay medical bills. The insurance companies offering insurance cover aim at making a lot of profits. According to study done in the year 2011, by the pro-health reform group indicated an increase in profits. The nations largest health insurance companies reported more than 56% increase in profits in 2009 over the previous year. These companies include united health, WellPoint, Aetna, Humana and Cigna. They cover most of the Americans who have health insurance. The health insurance companies face a lot of critics for offering traditional insurance. This involves pooling of risks. This is because many Americans who buy the premiums do face the risks they insure themselves against. It is for this reason that health insurers can be considered to be low-risk money managers. They do gain a lot from long-term healthcare accounts. Other people argu e that insurance companies in the United States charge high administrative costs (Harry andKristina 57). The private insurance companies have a large share in the economy. They have employed more than 470000 people in the year 2004. These costs are making them unable to give complete cover on people of the United States. This has led to the high rate of death cases especially among people who require funds to have a surgery. The insurance industry has attracted weak insurer who are unable to work efficiently with hospital systems. The insurance company has attracted companies who have adopted shadow pricing. As a consequence, the companies are unable to pay for medical bills in hospitals. Many people continue to die every day when these companies fail to cater for their health expenses. In conclusion, I have a strong opinion that the health insurance companies should support people in paying medical bills. Many people are dying as illustrated. This is due to lack of finances to cater for their treatment. Those people who are undergoing surgeries should be supported by the health insurance companies regardless of whether they have paid or not. The federal government should intervene in this matter. This will help to reduce exploitation of people by the insurance industry. A lot of money go to the insurance companies from both individuals and the government. Most of these companies aim at increasing their profits. They do not get concerned with the health status of people in the United States. However, the whole industry has not failed entirely. Thus, needs a lot of improvements in the industry. I have an opinion that a law should be passed to have an extensive control of the insurance industry. Buy custom Health Insurance essay

Reconstruction Finance Corporation

Reconstruction Finance Corporation The Reconstruction Finance Corporation was a federal lending agency created by the U.S. government under President Herbert Hoover to rescue banks on the brink of failure and restore Americans faith in the financial system while minimizing the crises of the Great Depression in the early 1930s. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation eventually grew in scope to finance agricultural, commercial and industrial endeavors through billions of dollars in loans until it was disbanded in 1957. It played a significant role in funding New Deal programs under President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to help the United States recover from its worst financial crisis. Key Takeaways: Reconstruction Finance Corporation The Reconstruction Finance Corporation was created by Congress on Jan. 22, 1932, amid the Great Depression to provide emergency capital to financial institutions. The support provided to those banks has been likened to the bailouts provided in modern times. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation helped minimize bank failures and improve monetary conditions prior to the banking crisis of 1933 by financing agriculture, commerce and industry.Under President Franklin Delano Roosevelts New Deal, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation became the largest investor in the economy, representing a relocation of Americans economic power from Wall Street to Washington, D.C., according to historians. Creation of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation Signed into law by Hoover on Jan. 22, 1932, the Reconstruction Finance Act created the federal lending agency with $500 million in capital from the U.S. Treasury to provide emergency financing facilities for financial institutions, to aid in financing agriculture, commerce, and industry.   Hoover, describing the agencys role at the White House signing ceremony that day, said: It brings into being a powerful organization with adequate resources, able to strengthen weaknesses that may develop in our credit, banking, and railway structure, in order to permit business and industry to carry on normal activities free from the fear of unexpected shocks and retarding influences. Its purpose is to stop deflation in agriculture and industry and thus to increase employment by the restoration of men to their normal jobs. †¦ It should give opportunity to mobilize the gigantic strength of our country for recovery. The agency was modeled after the War Finance Corporation, the federal governments effort to centralize, coordinate, and fund the procurement and supply operations that accompanied formal U.S. entry into World War I in April 1917, according to Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland research officer Walker F. Todd. The Reconstruction Finance Corporation distributed nearly $2 billion a year in loans in its first three years of existence, though the money was not enough to lift the country out of its economic woes. The money did, however, provide liquidity to the financial system and prevent many banks from failing by allowing Americans to remove their savings. Criticism of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation The Reconstruction Finance Corporation endured criticism for bailing out some banks and railroads and not others- particularly larger institutions instead of smaller, community-based ones. For example, the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was hit for lending $65 million in the early years to Bank of America and $264 million to railroads controlled by some of the wealthiest families and corporations in the nation. The original plan for the agency was to help rescue small banks in rural parts of the United States that typically did not have access to Federal Reserve loans. According to Hoover: It is not created for the aid of big industries or big banks. Such institutions are amply able to take care of themselves. It is created for the support of the smaller banks and financial institutions and, through rendering their resources liquid, to give renewed support to business, industry, and agriculture.† Jesse Jones, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, pictured at the hearing of the Senate banking and currency committee. Bettmann Archive / Getty Images The agency was also subject to scrutiny because of its secretive nature, at least at first, and because it was seen as corrupt under Chairman Jesse Jones, a Houston businessman, in the final stages of its existence. It was revealed, for example, that the Reconstruction Finance Corporation had loaned $90 million to a Chicago bank whose chairman had served as president of the agency. Eventually the agency was forced to disclose the name of all of its borrowers under the Emergency Relief and Construction Act. The agency revealed that many of the borrowers were, in fact, large banks not intended to benefit from the corporation. The agency stopped lending money in 1953 and ceased operations in 1957. Impact of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation The creation of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation is credited with saving many banks and it also provided an alternative to the controversial plan of making the Federal Reserve the so-called lender of last resort to failing financial institutions during this crisis. (A lender of last resort is a term used to describe the central bank of a nation that works to rescue troubled institutions. The Federal Reserve acts in that capacity in the United States.) Critics of the Federal Reserve plan worried it would lead to inflation and even deepen the nations depression. The agency also served to strengthen the capital structure of the banking system and eventually morphed into a convenient agency through which to extend government credit to many additional groups which the Roosevelt administration sought to aid, wrote B.W. Patch in the 1935 CQ Press publication The R.F.C. under Hoover and Roosevelt. As supporters of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation noted at the time of its creation, the agencys mission was not merely saving the banks but to provide relief to millions of Americans who had deposited their money in them. Allowing the banks to fail, in other words, would have led to hardship beyond which the Depression had already inflicted. Comparison of Finkel and O'Brian Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Comparison of Finkel and O'Brian - Essay Example O’Brian in his book â€Å"How to Tell a War story† illustrates on events during a war and the art of telling those events. He paints on a vivid picture of war and the effects it has on people involved in it. This makes the story true and very realistic as it drives a point in today’s life because war has become a big part of life in the recent times. Considering the book wrote by Finkel, â€Å"The Good Soldiers,† he made art out of the crucial moments in history. His book is the most honest, agonizing, and vividly made accounts of the current war. It captures the horror nature of war. It actually reveals the fact about war and explains what happened in real life. According to the story Finkel tells about war, being a journalist who is supposed to report on facts, I truly think that he is actually telling the truth in his story. According to what he explains in the book, he witnessed and in reality interacted with the victims who were involved in the war, t he soldiers. He wrote the story from the stories he was told by the victims concerning what they experienced during the struggle. This shows clearly that Finkel did not make up the story as a fiction but was a fact that happened in reality.   O’Brian described that a true war story is never moral. He explained that a true war story does not instruct or even encourage virtues. ...   Ã‚  Finkel as a journalist witnessed the 2-16 battalion because he spent eight months with the solders who were involved in the war. The soldiers therefore told him what they experienced in the war struggles and how they lost some of their fellows and some being wounded. From these stories, Finkel managed to write the real experience of war expressing the pain, sorrow, death and destruction as they were experienced by the soldiers. This is also clear evidence that the story is very true.  Ã‚  Finkel described the horrible situation of war which ended in death and destruction. When he was writing the book, he got some stories and ideas from the soldiers who at first thought that he had ill motives with the book. His main idea was to use the book to write about the battalion experience of infantry soldiers and character in the lost moment during the Iraq war. He expresses all his opinions and feelings about war in the story. The story is really explains real; facts about war. Fin kel is very realistic in his story because during the events, he was present and witnessed the situation having coming into contact with the soldiers, â€Å"Here came the explosion. It came through the door†¦. It came through the good soldiers.† He made clear facts that the soldiers were wounded in the war. He further described war as hell due to the fact that decent men were sent to fights where they were wounded and killed creating a lot of fear and grief. â€Å"The battalion chaplain was in search of a quick business in soldiers wishing to unburden their grief, fear and desperation.† O’Brian in the chapter â€Å"How to Tell a War Story† also illustrates how young and innocent men are s-end in fights where they later suffer

Early Physiotherapy to Prevent Lymphoedema after Surgery Assignment

Early Physiotherapy to Prevent Lymphoedema after Surgery - Assignment Example In most research studies, there exist biases that may cause possible deviation of results. Choosing the most appropriate study methods is important to avoid instances of bias in research (Greenhalgh and Tylor 1997). Research appraisals assist in establishing the question posed by the author(s). It is vital for research studies to possess well-developed study questions relevant to the topic under study (LoBiondo-Wood and Haber 2010). In addition, the identified study questions must have applicable parameters and study populations and discern relevant outcomes. Statistical testing should be based on study hypotheses because they are fundamental in research studies (Greenhalgh and Tylor 1997). Appraisals assist in ascertaining the relevance of hypothesis testing the techniques used in a given study. Appraisal also contributes to determining whether research is based on practice (Brown 2014). Lacomba et al. (2010) carried out a study aiming at ascertaining the efficacy of early physiotherapy in post cancer surgery. An appraisal of the study carried out by Lacomba et al. (2010) reveals that there exist proper applications of interventions for physiotherapy sessions during post cancer surgery. Notably, the research conducted by Lacomba et al. (2010) is indispensable in promoting prevention of secondary lymphedema immediately after surgery. Even though the study was successful in addressing the hypothesis question, it had various limitations such as the recruiting of subjects from a single hospital. It is noteworthy that most single hospital recruitment may result in systematic variations during provision of care between other regions and the hospital. Lacomba et al. (2010) provide a vivid description of secondary lymphoedema within the first paragraph that clearly introduces the study.

Three Plans For Reconstruction Essay -- essays research papers

Analysis of the Three Plans for Reconstruction The American Civil War, lasting from 1861-1865, was the most severe military conflict the country had seen; it involved the United States of America (the Union), and eleven secessionist Southern states (the Confederate States of America). The war was the upshot of decades worth of political, social, and economic conflict between the agricultural South, which produced mainly cash crops such as cotton, tobacco, and sugarcane, and the industrial North. The South depended on its four million slaves for its social and economic livelihood, whereas the North despised slavery as immoral and illegal. Even before General Lee’s surrender in 1865, the federal government was confronted with an acute dilemma, how to reunite the country. First Lincoln, then Johnson, and lastly Congress, imposed their ideas of how best to restore the Union, that is to say properly execute the task of Reconstruction. Reconstruction was initiated by incumbant President Abraham Lincoln before the war ended. On December 8, 1963, Lincoln revealed his rather extremely lenient Reconstruction plan. He proposed to grant a pardon to any confederate (excluding high-ranking officials), who would swear their allegence to the Union and accept the end of slavery. If ten percent of the 1860 voting population had taken the oath, that state would hold a constitutional convention. If the delegates had written a state constitution endorsing the 13th Amendment, that state could be re-admitted to the Union. Andrew Johnson, President Lincoln’s Vice President, and successor after his assasination in April of 1865, unveiled his own Reconstruction plan on May 29 of the same year. Johnson’s plan, which closely resembled Lincoln’s, said the President would appoint a governor to each state (after ten percent of the 1860 population took the oath Lincoln had prescribed in 1863), who would convene a constitutional convention. At this convention, the state had to write a new constitution, void secession, abolish slavery, ratify the 13th Amendment, and stop the payment of war debts. If given a pardon by the President, former Confederate officers and persons owning land worth over $20,000, could vote. Johnson felt that under his plan, Reconstruction would take a few months; in fact, the belief that his plan was too lenient towards the South –he granted 13,000 pardo... ...to restore Southern society to antebellum status (as demonstrated by his vetos of the Freedmen’s Bureau, and of the Civil Rights Bill); and as a result, replenish the ruined Southern economy. Congressional Reconstruction, brought on a complete social revolution in the south. The South had a military occupation on their hands, and due to their continual resistance to Reconstruction allowed for the passing of seven separate legislations, aimed at changing their way of life. Politically, blacks had significant potential with the right to vote, especially in Mississippi, South Carolina, and Louisiana, where they were the majority of the population. Blacks managed to gain seventeen seats in Congress (two were in the Senate), and an equivalent number of state offices. Had the South agreed to Lincoln’s terms, or even Johnson’s, they would have been able to continue politically, socially and economically just as they had before the war. Unfortunately for the South, their pride and ignorance, caused them to unknowingly choose the greater of three evils. Although Reconstruction ultimately failed, it would have attained optimal results had the South accepted Lincolnâ⠂¬â„¢s Reconstruction Plan.

War Outline

Intro- It was mid-spring in the United States Capitol- Washington, DC, the grass was green and onlookers could take in the view of the Washington Monument. On the specific date of April 17, 1965, the streets were not only occupied by historical monuments and statues of American History, but also occupied of 25,000 outraged protesters against the Vietnam War. This rally, organized by the Students for a Democratic Society, was the first significant act of defiance towards the Unites States Government. And this act of defiance was the beginning of a societal trend of abhorrence towards the Vietnam War. An angered country, defiance in Society and opposition in many households, is just the commencement of the Antiwar Movement. * Anti-War Movement (Overview): 1. A country-wide disapproval of the Vietnam War. a. â€Å"We weren’t on the wrong side in Vietnam, we were the wrong side. † –Daniel Ellsberg The most Dangerous Man in America.. b. Many Households disliked it beca use the number of people being drafted rapidly increased over two months and it affected them. . The deaths of the soldiers were twice as heartbreaking because they died in a war that their families disapproved of. 2. The Vietnam War was the first war to be played out in people’s homes (on their televisions and radios). d. Several different News Channels showed clips and photos taken by photographers and videographers in Vietnam. e. The general public couldn’t stand the realities of war, such as dying children and mass murders etc. f. This meant the general public scrutinized and judged it more often than previous wars. . It was even worse with the fact that most people didn’t see why the US army was involved in the first place * The Beginning of the Anti War Movement. * â€Å"Hey, Hey LBJ! How Many Kids Did You Kill Today? † * * Celebrities and The Anti War Movement. * Muhammad Ali. * Muhammad Ali, the world heavyweight boxing champion, refused to even c onsider going to Vietnam in 1966. * Called him a draft dodger and traitor because he refused to go to Vietnam because of his beliefs. Muhammad Ali also tore up his draft card and other men had followed his footsteps. * As a Muslim, he held war to be against his religious principles. * According to an article written by Jack Olsen in Sports Illustrated, the Governor of Illinois found Ali ‘disgusting', and the Governor of Maine said Ali ‘should be held in utter contempt by every patriotic American'. * An American Legion post in Miami asked people to ‘join in condemnation of this unpatriotic, loudmouthed, bombastic individual'. 2. * Washington DC Marches. April 17, 1965 * Organizers had expected about 2000 marchers. The actual count was about 25,000. * This was the largest anti-war protest to ever have been held in Washington DC at that time. * The number of marchers approximately equaling the number of US soldiers in Vietnam. * The college students’ main motiv e for this ‘gathering’ was to protest against the US bombing campaign. * November 27, 1965 * 35,000 anti-war protesters circle the White House then march on to the Washington Monument for a rally

Boutique Management System Essay

1. DESCRIPTION: The project is entitled as â€Å"BOUTIQUE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM† is developed by Visual Basic as front end and MS-Access as the back end. This project is designed to provide the easy access to maintain the reports of boutique service. This project is very useful to the all type of boutique service. By using this project we can maintain the reports of placing-order and delivery details, customer details, details, branch office details and working staff details. This project is developed with the help of visual basic 6.0. Boutique service is necessary and important for the society. A boutique is a small-scale to medium-scale shop employed to order raw dress materials, customized tailoring and delivered by the given date. Boutiques are distinguished from ordinary to expensive studio by features such as advanced techniques of perfect fashion tailoring, specialization and individualization of services, and committed delivery time, which are optional for most everyday services. As a special service, boutiques are usually expensive than usual boutique services, and their use is typically restricted to type of orders where one or more of these features are considered important enough to warrant the cost. Different boutique services operate on all scales, from within specific towns or cities, to regional, national and global services. In cities, there are often many boutique for various specialities. Owner operate alone or in small groups.. Here we design the project which involves the following data base. * Placing-Order and delivery details * Delivery Status * Customer details * Branch office details * Employee details The placing-order and delivery database contain the information about the cloth tailoring booking dates and customer name, delivery date, and delivery report. The delivery report has information such as the receiving person sign and whether the goods are delivered with good condition or not, the date and time of delivery. The customer database contains information about regular customer details such as customer name, address and their accounts details. Usually the boutique shops may or may not have branches across the cities and country so the branch office’s profit and booking, delivery details are maintained in the different database. The employee data base contain the personal details of staff such as employee name, address, data of joining, salary per month, mobile number, blood group. SYSTEM STUDY System analysis is a process of gathering the facts concerning the system breaking them into elements and relationship between elements. It provides a framework for visualizing the organizational and environmental factors that operate on a system. The quality of work performed by a machine is usually uniform, neat and more reliable when compared to doing the same operations manually. 2.1 EXISTING SYSTEM The Placing-Order details, the customer details and the Delivery Details are maintained manually. The study of the existing system revealed that the system has several drawbacks. DRAWBACKS * The existing system has no security measure against logging in and no checks are made for authorized users. * The end user has to remember a lot of command to make efficient use of the system. * The system does not have any descriptive reports and thus did not help management in decision-making. * The Delivery information per day is sometimes unable to find. * Enormous amount of time is consumed PROPOSED SYSTEM The proposed system is been developed to maintain the Boutique Management for customers to maintain the Placing-Order details, Customer details, Delivery details, etc., BENEFITS * The user can enter only if the username and the password are correct. * The process of planning will be easy since every process is computerized. * Time Saving. * The Delivery information per day and per month can be known. * The details of the all saved information can be viewed. * The data can be accessed easily whenever needed and so the manual work can be reduced SYSTEM ENVIRONMENT: HARDWARE CONFIGURATION: PROCESSOR: PENTIUM IV HARD DISK CAPACITY: 40 GB MONITOR: 14 â€Å"SAMTRON MONITOR FLOPPY DISK DRIVE: 1.44 MB PRINTER: TVS 80 COLOR INTERNAL MEMORY CAPACITY: 128 MB KEYBOARD: LOGITECH OF 104 KEYS CPU CLOCK: 1.08 GHz MOUSE: LOGITECH MOUSE SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION: OPERATING SYSTEM: WINDOWS XP FRONT END : VISUAL BASIC6.0 BACK END : MS-Access 2003 Software Details Front End Visual Basic (VB) is a computer programming language. VB is the third-generation event-driven programming language an Intregrated Development Environment (IDE) from Microsoft for its COM programming model. VB is also considered a relatively easy to learn and use programming language, because of its graphical development features and BASIC heritage. Visual Basic was derived from BASIC and enables the rapid application development (RAD) of graphical user interface (GUI) applications, access to databases using Data Access Objects, Remote Data Objects, or ActiveX Data Objects, and creation of ActiveX controls and objects. Scripting languages such as VBA and VBScript are syntactically similar to Visual Basic, but perform differently. A programmer can put together an application using the components provided with Visual Basic itself. Programs written in Visual Basic can also use the Windows API, but doing so requires external function declarations. Back End Microsoft Office Access, previously known as Microsoft Access, is a relational database management system from Microsoft that combines the relational Microsoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software development tools. It is a member of the 2007 Microsoft Office system. Access can use data stored in Access/Jet, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, or any ODBC-compliant data container (including MySQL and PostgreSQL). Skilled software developers and data architects use it to develop application software. Relatively unskilled programmers and non-programmer â€Å"power users† can use it to build simple applications. It supports some object-oriented techniques but falls short of being a fully object-oriented development tool. Access was also the name of a communications program from Microsoft, meant to compete with ProComm and other programs. This proved a failure and was dropped. Years later Microsoft reused the name for its database software. Access version 1.0 was released in November 1992. Since that time, the following versions have been released: 2.0, 95, 97, 2000, 2002 (also called XP), 2003, and the latest, 2007. Microsoft specified the minimum operating system for Version 2.0 as Microsoft Windows v3.0 with 4 MB of RAM. 6 MB RAM was recommended along with a minimum of 8 MB of available hard disk space (14 MB hard disk space recommended). The product was shipped on seven 1.44 MB diskettes. The manual shows a 1993 copyright date. The software worked well with very large records sets but testing showed some circumstances caused data corruption. For example, file sizes over 700 MB were problematic (note that most hard disks were smaller than 700 MB at the time this was in wide use). The Getting Started manual warns about a number of circumstances where obsolete device drivers or incorrect configurations can cause data loss. Access’s initial codename was Cirrus; the forms engine was called Ruby. This was before Visual Basic – Bill Gates saw the prototypes and decided that the BASIC language component should be co-developed as a separate expandable application, a project called Thunder. The two projects were developed separately as the underlying forms engines were incompatible with each other; however, these were merged together again after VBA.

Why after school jobs are benificail pursausive speech essays In a world where getting ahead less of what you know and more of what youve done, I think that after school jobs for students are increasingly beneficial. I dont believe the myths that with a job there is no time for school work of extracurricular activities. I am a junior, I have had jobs since I was 15, I have never had my G.P.A drop below 3.2, and I have always been involved in at least three school activities. A teenager that has a job is more apt to be taught responsibility, learns more about money and gets a jump start on the real world after high school. One challenge that I have had to overcome, but ultimately grown stronger from is that of finding an appropriate time to finish my homework. I no longer take class time to work on my assignments for granted. While most of my friends who dont work usually go home and sit on their sofa for four hours before opening their bookbag, I have found that Friends and ER can still run their show without me watching, something I am afraid many of my peers have yet to discover. And shockingly enough it is possible to go for weeks without watching any television! Having a job has also taught me to respect authority. I have held jobs as a carhop, a waitress, and a grocery checker and sacker. Like most jobs that high schooler have, I am constantly around people. After being yelled at for undercooked steak or smashed bread, it is much easier to deal with rude people in other situations, I am much less likely to lose my patience and I understand that many problems and attitudes depend on circumstance. Many adults are also extremely impressed that is is automatic for me to address people older than me as maam or sir when I have a question or request. I think another positive was that jobs impact teenagers is that it teaches them about money. At the risk of sounding like a codjity old man, kids these days dont know ...

Spring Phenology and Climate Change

Spring Phenology and Climate Change As spring arrives we notice the changing of seasons by the weather, but also by a host of natural events. Depending on where you live, the crocuses may poke through the snow, the killdeer may be back, or the cherry trees may bloom. There is an orderly sequence of events that seem to occur, with various spring flowers appearing in order, red maple buds bursting into new leaves, or the old lilac by the barn scenting the air. This seasonal cycle of natural phenomena is called phenology. Global climate change appears to be interfering with the phenology of many species, at the very heart of species interactions. What Is Phenology? In temperate regions like the northern half of the United States, there is comparatively little biological activity in winter. Most plants are dormant, and so are the insects feeding on them. In turn, animals that rely on these insects  such as bats and birds are hibernating or spending the cold months in more southerly locations. Ectotherms like reptiles and amphibians, which take their body warmth from their environment, also have active phases tied to the seasons. This long winter period constrains all the growing, breeding, and dispersing activities that plants and animals do to a short favorable window. That’s what makes spring so vibrant, with plants flowering and putting on new growth, insects emerging and breeding, and birds flying back to take advantage of this short-lived bounty. The onsets of each of these activities add up to so many phenological markers. What Triggers Phenological Events? Different organisms respond to different cues to initiate seasonal activities. Many plants will start growing leaves again after a set period of dormancy, which very roughly dictates the leaf-out window. Cue that more precisely determine when the buds break can be soil temperature, air temperature, or water availability. Similarly, temperature cues can promote the beginning of insect activity. Day length itself can be the operative trigger for some seasonal events. It is only when there are a sufficient number of daylight hours that reproductive hormones will be produced in many bird species. Why Are Scientists Concerned with Phenology? The most energy-demanding period in the life of most animals is when they reproduce. For that reason, it is to their advantage to coincide breeding (and for many, the raising of young) during a period when food is most abundant. Caterpillars should hatch just as the young tender leaves of oak tree emerge, before they harden and become less nutritious. Breeding songbirds need to time the hatching of their young just during that peak in caterpillar activity, so they can take advantage of this rich source of protein to feed their offspring. Many species have evolved to exploit peaks in resource availability, so all these seemingly independent phenological events are indeed part of a complex web of precise interactions. Disruptions in seasonal events can have profound effects on ecosystems. How Is Climate Change Affecting Phenology? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, in a 2007 report, estimated that spring arrived earlier by 2.3 to 5.2 days per decade in the previous 30 years. Among hundreds of observed changes, the leafing out of ginkgo trees in Japan, the flowering of lilacs, and the arrival of warblers have all shifted earlier in the year. The problem is that not all these shifts happen at the same rate, if at all. For example: Winter moths have been timed to hatch just when the young oak leaves burst from their buds. With climate change, both have been happening earlier in the year, but significantly more so for the winter moth hatch. The young emerging caterpillars then starve and die. Some North American migratory songbirds have advanced their arrival data. However, at least one of the main tree species they forage on has shifted its leafing out even earlier. Birds might then be missing the peak in availability of insects that are found on these trees and provide the energy and protein needed by the birds at the beginning of their nesting season. These types of misalignment of important events in nature are called phenological mismatches. There is much research underway currently to recognize where these mismatches might be occurring.

Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words - 8

Economics - Essay Example As a way of influencing the demand and supply of money in the economy, the Federal Reserve use either contractionary or expansionary money policy. Because, the interest rates are low there is a high availability of money supply in the economy as a result, there is moderate inflation occurrence that is currently at two percent. As the Fed chairperson, the use of restrictive monetary policy measures ensure s there is a steady flow of money in the economy during the period (Bartolotti, 2006). This is because restrictive monetary policy ensures that there is a higher level of depository interest rate for commercial banksas it borrows money from the Federal Reserve banks as they keep their reserves at the authorized level. In addition, it is critical to increase the open market operations by ensuring the citizens with extra money to save can invest in it because of the highly expected returns leading to money being drained out of the economy. As a result, the banking institutions will cha nge a higher rate as it lends less money with increased reserve requirement thus, individuals will seek alternatives for seeking funds rather than borrowing money. In addition, the government can make investments with the funds collected from open market operations leading to increased gross domestic product (GDP) growth. With an unemployment rate that is quite high, there is a need to carry out measures that will influence the growth of employment levels in the economy. Concerning, the new classical economists notion on unemployment and inflation, they highly advocate for a stable inflation-unemployment trade-off that is achievable through the Phillips curve. Based on the Philips curve the trade off is achievable on the assumption of changes in the price level in the private sector freely. This is because the Philips curve enhances the relationship between inflation and unemployment because of fiscal and monetary policy changes (Knoop, 2004). Nonetheless, the classical economics ar gue based on the conceptualization that the expectations-augmented in the Phillips curve emphasizes that the unemployment rate should not extend further than the natural level as it could lead to increased inflation rates. More significantly, it is critical to implement fiscal and monetary policies to influence employment levels (Knoop, 2004). This is because the economy is recovering from a recession period and the economy tends to grow with the aggregate demand (AD) increasing therefore, the levels of employment will increase. Even though, there is an increased pressure for a raise in wages after rescission, the rate at which the economy grows is faster, and the wages begin to rises slowly. Based on the Philips curve an outward shift of the aggregate demand AD curve because of increased consumer spending causes the equilibrium level of national output to shift to the point Y2 beyond potential gross domestic product (GDP). As a result, this creates a positive output gap, and it is more preferably attributed to cause a rise in inflationary pressure

Reflective Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words - 3

Reflective Paper - Essay Example The biographical study approach was leveraged in the effort to analyze the entrepreneurship process from the point of view of Spreckels’ life as an immigrant and the evolution of his business enterprises. There are three steps to the method. The first step relates to the analysis of the family and ethnicity of Spreckels. The second step relates to the evolution of his business interests. The third step relates to how his immigrant status shaped his business life (Spiekermann 1-21). The article is well-written and makes use of the biographical study in a very structured fashion. It is informative and allows the reader to glean insights into the entrepreneurship process in general and its demonstration in the life and times of Spreckels (Spiekermann 1-21). The paper details the results of a case study involving the introduction of information technology into Fairfield University, detailing those aspects of the introduction relating to impacts on management and on the economic considerations relating to the acquisition and rollout of a vital pieces of IT, including computing hardware and networking infrastructure. Those two aspects, management impacts from the perspective of faculty use and economic considerations relating to the demand for the IT resources relative to supply and adequacy of the computing investments. The findings include that such exercises require extensive planning, and can be justified from the point of view of learning and efficiency improvements that offset the costs of the investments in IT (Tellis). The researcher detailed the study methodology within the paper in straightforward fashion, and that methodology had four steps. One is the design of the case study. Two is the undertaking of the case study itself. Three is the analysis of the data. Four is the derivation of conclusions and implications, and the crafting of recommendations for next steps (Tellis). The paper relied
